As part of ongoing efforts to reduce food and packaging waste while boosting access to local, quality food, Feed My People (FMP) has launched a new publicly accessible plastic recycling hub. Made possible through generous support from the Royal Credit Union Foundation (RCU), this outdoor receptacle is now open to accept polyethylene plastic. To celebrate, FMP will host a dedication of the RCU Foundation Recycling Hub on Thursday, April 24.
"The Royal Credit Union Foundation has a long history of support for Feed My People," said John Sackett, President of the Royal Credit Union Foundation. "Feed My People plays a vital role in providing food security to over 75,000 people each year. Royal is proud to support this plastic recycling center, which will bolster Feed My People's sustainability efforts and further our shared commitment to community well-being."
The hub builds on FMP's existing recycling initiatives by inviting the public to contribute. FMP already handles large volumes of plastic waste through its daily food distribution. With the support of a baler installed last spring, all collected polyethylene plastic, such as shopping bags, bubble wrap, and case overwrap, will be compacted onsite and sent for upcycling into new materials.
The dedication coincides with FMP's Earth Week fundraiser, running April 21-25. The campaign underscores the food bank's long-term commitment to sustainability and aims to raise at least $5,000 to help purchase local food for families in need.
